Luckily, it seems players with a reverence for the N64 game will find New Pokemon Snap to be a much more expansive take on the idea, with the game clarifying that it’ll have almost four times the Pokemon to find in its world. To be specific, the game will offer over 200 different Pokemon to photograph, with the trailer hinting they’ll come in all different shapes and sizes.

To put that in perspective, the Nintendo 64 version of Pokemon Snap had 63 Pokemon to take photographs of, with the roster mostly including classic names from prior entries in the series. New Pokemon Snap will unsurprisingly look to be much grander in scope, and if early footage highlights anything, it seems the Pokemon included will come from various different regions such as Sun and Moon’s Toucannon and Sword and Shield’s Grookey alongside classic staples like Pichu and Torchic, there’s definitely a widespread of Pokemon for fans of all eras.

For those who never played the N64 version of the title, the core focus of Pokemon Snap is to venture around on-rails environments taking photographs of roaming pocket monsters. The first game would often task players with setting up high-scoring photo ops using objects, with players able to throw fruit to attract Pokemon for a premium shot. The strange concept went on to become a cult-hit with fans of the franchise, eventually leading to the announcement of New Pokemon Snap last year.

The follow-up will see players venture to Lental to help solve the mystery of the “Illumina phenomenon,” which sees the Pokemon and flora of the location glow. Teaming up with Professor Mirror, the island’s resident Pokemon specialist, players will get to the bottom of the peculiar occurrence, capturing pictures of the island’s iconic residents. Much like the previous game, it seems Professor Mirror will judge the player’s photographs, awarding points for the clarity of the picture, the positioning of the Pokemon, and what’s going on in the snapshot. It won’t be long until players can set out on their newest adventure in the Pokemon world, with the game shipping in just a few months.

New Pokemon Snap will be available for Nintendo Switch on April 30, 2021.
