With this upcoming iteration of RE4, a lot of people will be anticipating what can be expected from the reimagining of the 2005 classic. While the developer has said it will be bringing a few surprises, it will also retain much of what made the original so beloved, including Resident Evil 4’s divisive island section. Given the high praise the remakes of the second and third entries in the series received, it stands to reason that a retelling of one of the franchise’s best installments will be a smash hit as well.

Of course, time will tell on that front, but for now some new screenshots from Resident Evil 4 have been doing the rounds recently. In a post on Twitter from the official Japanese RE portal, fans have been treated to more images which show some familiar locations, such as the castle area. As with previous screenshots, trailers, and teasers, these latest uploads really hammer home the idea that Capcom is going for a much darker mood for the remake. While the original release had a somewhat goofy, B-movie lean, this reimagining seems to be going for a broodier, even somber, vibe.

Over the decades, there have been plenty of installments in Capcom’s horror staple, but Resident Evil 4 is considered the best of the bunch by many. Moving away from the fixed camera angle of its predecessors, the fourth entry introduced an over-the-shoulder viewpoint, which was something of a game changer back then. It also went for a more action-orientated approach, which was both its strength and its weakness, as it led to the fifth and sixth games, which many consider to be the least favorable.

In general, horror fans have a lot to look forward to in 2023. Aside from RE4, there’s the remake of Dead Space, as well as some indie offerings such as The Outlast Trials and Sons of the Forest, the follow-up to 2018’s The Forest. In short, fans of scary games are in for a good time this year.

Resident Evil 4 is scheduled to release on March 24 for PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
