Now, researchers at Northwestern University and George Washington University have created a temporary pacemaker that dissolves in place and is reabsorbed by the body when it’s no longer needed, making surgery to remove it unnecessarily. Their findings were published in Nature Biotechnology last month. Fred Kusumoto, MD, president of the Heart Rhythm Society, calls the pacemaker “an exciting and innovative advance."
