New Protein Burrito Helps Keep Vaccines Stable Without Cold Storage
In a study conducted at the University of Michigan, researchers found that subjecting whole inactivated viruses to a chemical process known as “coacervation” successfully insulated them from the fluctuations in temperature that can spell their doom. The October study was published in the journal Biomaterial Sciences. “Any improvement in the temperature stability of medicines would help to decrease the costs and improve the quality of life for people who have to deal with these types of therapeutics every day of their lives,” co-author Sarah Perry, PhD, associate professor in the department of chemical engineering at the University of Massachusetts, tells Verywell....
